Engineering graduate students’ mental health: A scoping literature review

Background Mental health issues reported among college-aged individuals have increased. Prevalence of these has an established impact on students' personal, professional, and academic outcomes. Graduate students experience unique stressors that their mental health. In particular, engineering graduate lower help-seeking tendencies, which can the severity length problems. Purpose We investigate literature concerning health, focusing outcomes, measures, findings, to highlight gaps in current need for further research. Scope/Method Five research databases, EBSCO: CINAHL, PsycINFO, ProQuest: ERIC, PubMed, Scopus, were searched a scoping review. Inclusion exclusion criteria applied during screening process. Peer-reviewed publications (i.e., articles conference papers) identified coded study focus, keywords, participants institution(s), journal discipline, type, methods used, work referenced, addition findings. Results Nineteen 4,826 studies included Ten outcomes 13 measures discussed. findings grouped into five themes: social support sense belonging; student–advisor relationship; cultural barriers faced by international students; gender racial stereotypes; generalized Conclusions Research is limited. Given direct ties well-being ultimately success, education researchers should focus studying experiences, sharing communicating best practices all stakeholders.
